Clebe
McClary had it all. He won scholarships, set state records for athletic
achievements, taught Sunday School in his home of Florence, South
Carolina. He married the most attractive cheerleader from his high
school--and then his life changed. He joined the Marine Corps, was
sent to officer's training, and directly on to Vietnam during the
height of the war. He was operating behind enemy lines in that Southeast
Asian nation when a satchel charge exploded, nearly ending his storybook
life. Lieutenant Clebe McClary lost an eye, an arm and much of the
use of his remaining hand in that blast. But his recovery and his
resolve make him a true American hero--and a role model of perseverance
for your students.
