Teen
violence in school evokes feelings ranging from apathy to denial
to terror. Violence plagues our inner-city neighborhoods and schools,
and it has also spilled into our seemingly "safe" and
tranquil suburban and rural areas. From Los Angeles and Chicago
to Jonesboro and Littleton, the sense of community has given way
to alienation and suspicion. Many schools now have metal detectors
to check for students' weapons. Police officers patrol school campuses.
And still we hear all-too-common stories of teens killing teens.
This fast-paced drama exposes how unaddressed attitudes and problems
can lead to violent tragedy. The program traces the steps of a troubled
high school student, clearly showing the points at which those around
him could have intervened to prevent a disaster.
What happens when teens see a friend with a weapon
or hear a classmate threaten violence? What can be done when a teacher
spots a student who can't control feelings of anger? An epilogue
featuring recording artist Steven Curtis Chapman helps teachers
and students get a handle on possible solutions.
